I highly recommend Grainne as a tutor. I took a few lessons from her because I had absolutely no idea about the piano and she always made me feel completely comfortable and educated me without feeling like I had no idea what was going on. She's very clear and goes at her pace, which is great since she's not a very fast learner. 10/10

When did you develop your passion for music and your favorite instrument?
Music has always been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I started playing the piano at the age of 7 and had 2 teachers over the course of 15 years. I was a part of music school from a very young age and most of my best memories come from there. I went to theory classes with my friends, took piano lessons, and sang in the choir. I was totally sunk in and always loved it. Since the piano is such a great instrument as a lead instrument, I developed a passion for playing the classical flute between the ages of eleven and twelve. I auditioned for the local youth orchestra and was accepted because I had never taken classes before. I loved playing there and stayed a member until I was 18 years old.
Is there some kind of song or artist that you listen to on a loop without going crazy?
This is a good question; I am in the habit of listening to various artists over and over again and I never really get tired of them. My current artists that I can listen to on loop are the Beach Boys and their Pet Sounds album along with Abba's greatest hits.
Tell us about the most difficult or exciting course you could personally teach a music student.
This question depends a lot on the student. You could give a complete beginner a Rachmaninoff recital and they would find it incredibly difficult, or a standard fifth grade piece from an eighth grade program. I think the main goal of teaching is to break down difficult concepts into simpler terms that music students can understand. One specific area I like to focus on is the student's understanding of the minor scales. However, students often just need to learn the correct order of notes without understanding why they should be played a particular way. I have often explained to students that a minor scale consists of the relative major key and a raised seventh, students have the ability to form any minor scale without having to memorize notes.
What do you think is the most difficult instrument to master and why?
It may seem biased here, but the piano really is considered a difficult instrument to master. It is one of the easiest instruments to start with as anyone can walk up to a piano/keyboard and play a note with no experience. A violin or a flute, for example, need a lot of time at the beginning to find the right tone and playing. However, as you play the piano, it gets more and more difficult. This is mostly based on the sound we make when we press a key and there's no way to counteract this other than playing the same note again. This means that you have a lot of control over your finger movements and can listen to your piece.
What are your keys to success?
In music, piano or any other instrument, perseverance is the main key to success. Practicing every day, no matter how much time you spend doing it, is critical to your growth as a person and as a musician. In addition to consistency, the type of exercise you do is very important. If you play a piece over and over again, you will only become familiar with it, never really master it. My final key to success is to make sure you're enjoying what you're doing, as this makes some of the tedious exercises a bit easier.
Name three musicians that you dream of meeting at your favorite bar in the wee hours of the morning. Explain why.
Three musicians I would love to meet at my favorite bar would be Elton John, Paul McCartney, and Taylor Swift. I'd love to meet Elton John and Paul McCartney and have an in-depth conversation about how they write music and come up with song ideas. I've always had a huge admiration for singer-songwriters and to have an incredible insight into that world would be great. Taylor Swift has always received mixed reviews from both the public and the industry, so I'm curious to see how she handles positive and negative feedback.
Share a valuable anecdote about music or your days in music school.
A very valuable lesson I learned when I started competing is to be patient and take a deep breath before playing. It was my first competition at the Kilkenny Music Festival and I was waiting my turn to play. You have to wait for the judge to tell you to leave before doing anything on stage. When I got up to play, I remembered that my dad told me to wait until he got the okay. As you can imagine, things didn't go as planned and I immediately started playing. There was confusion among everyone and when I realized what I had done I slapped myself on stage. I've never been more embarrassed, but it's fair to say I learned my lesson that day.
What are the little details that make you a super pro when it comes to music?
I believe that my patience and affection for each of my students is a small touch that makes me a super professional in music. I tailor my lessons to the individual needs of each student, making sure they are happy with their progress and enjoy studying with me. I never criticize my students, I simply offer different ways to try a given exercise to encourage healthy growth and development. Becoming a super professional musician means making sure that the student has a healthy and nurturing relationship with both the piano and with me.
