The Mingda Magician X is a low-cost 3D printer that performs solidly in the test. The printer pays the low price with equipment deficit: LAN and WLAN are not supported and only PLA, TPU and ABS are suitable for printing material. But its screen is nice and big, it's quiet, and it has an impressive pressure head. Print quality varies slightly depending on the print object, but overall it's convincing. We have nothing to complain about open source software and processing.

Mingda Magician X on the test: space for large letter objects
aMingda-Magier Xit's already very cheapabout 330 euroand therefore interesting for everyone who wants to experience the world of 3D printing without making a high investment of three or even four figures. Despite the low price, there is a lot to offer: from easy assembly and commissioning to detailed instructions and step-by-step videos.
Print quality is generally good, but varies by subject. The hub and wedge, for example, work very well and have only minimal overhangs. Holes and pillars also work well, but the wires can be seen. And the corners are slightly bent here. Wizard X struggles a bit with the chess piece and rhombicuboctahedron. In the first, the threads are formed and details such as the collar of the chess piece get dirty. Some of the layers are also very visible, which is partly due to the not-so-stable filament provided. The octahedron is also wired, sags, and the supports are a bit awkward.
The minimum layer thickness is 0.05 millimeters. We measured a total deviation of just 0.08 millimeters for a 2 x 2 centimeter figure. To this extent, the printer is inour leaderboardeven at the front.
It is also way ahead when it comes to the maximum size of the object that will be printed. The print height (Z-axis) in particular is very high at 260 millimeters. And the 230 millimeters in width and depth are also very elegant. Thus, the Magician X has a maximum print volume of a respectable 13.8 litres.

Powerful software, plus sem (W) LAN
For such a cheap printer, you have to do without comfort. Can't connect directly via (W)LAN, but have to bypass via USB-C via PC. And the choice of printing material is limited to PLA, TPU and ABS.
On the other hand, we like the printer's nice big screen and overall very good finish. There is also a tool compartment. The open source software used is excellent and offers all the important functions such as forecasting the print time and forecasting the amount of material that will be required. In addition, the printer can also print without a PC and the table is automatically calibrated, although some readjustments must always be done by hand.
It takes a few seconds for the filament to start flowing after startup, but the Magician X prints well and quietly. At the end, the filament must be manually cut and the rest in the nozzle must be released piece by piece. Unfortunately, there is no automatic download here.
As for the price, not only the acquisition costs are cheap. The material can also be reordered for relatively little money: the printing material costs 28 euros per liter or kilo from the manufacturer. Average power consumption is 115 watts, which puts it in good company with the other larger 3D printers on the market.our leaderboard.

for the full ranking
This is how CHIP tests 3D printers
CHIP is also based on a test database specially programmed for us for testing 3D printers. It stores all the device details we collect. Results flow directly into the 3D printer's leaderboard. The overall rating is then calculated using the weighting shown below for the individual rating categories. For each newly tested 3D printer, the database recalculates the results for all other models. If a newly tested product sets the best value in a rating category, it will receive a rating of 1.0, all other models will be downgraded accordingly. If a proven 3D printer is barely available anymore, we remove it from the best list.
Print quality (60%):
With 3D printing, of course, the most important thing is what comes out in the end. We print a set of standard objects that challenge printers in many ways. For example, we are interested in whether larger flat surfaces can be modeled without any warping or warping.
We use a cube with an edge length of exactly 20mm to determine how accurately the printers meet the given dimensions; printers that fail to do so score fewer points. Filigree details as well as smooth surfaces, smooth curves and sharp edges are examined and evaluated. Precisely because the technology is still in development, there are very big differences here.
Ergonomics (15%):In the long run, the best print result does not satisfy the DIY 2.0 enthusiast if setting up and operating the printer is a hassle: therefore we test that all relevant points are easily accessible, that the software and firmware supplied with the printer are supported by the user - for example with commissioning, configuration, conversion or cleaning. We are interested in whether you really need a computer to operate it, or if the printer also accepts jobs from a USB stick or memory stick. There are also points if the printer can estimate how much print material (filament) it will need for the current job.
Amenities (15%):Here we reward connections and interfaces as well as the expandability of the device or individual components. On some models, the extruders can be expanded with another unit. Other models can accommodate a milling unit instead of the extruder, so the user can convert the printer into a CNC milling machine as needed.
Costs (10%):3D printers are expensive. However, acquisition costs are usually not the end of the story. We assess total costs, including material and energy costs. This TCO (total cost of ownership) accounts for 10% of the overall rating.
