Once the Cloud Management Gateway (CMG) is running and clients connect through it, you can monitor clients and network traffic. Monitor the service to make sure it's working optimally.

monitor customers

Clients connected through the CMG appear in the Configuration Manager console the same way as on-premises clients. For more information, seehow to monitor customers.

Monitor traffic in the console

Monitor traffic on the CMG using the Configuration Manager console:

  1. Go toAdministrationworkspace, expandCloud-Servicesand select thatCloud-Management-GatewayIs.

  2. Select the CMG from the list box.

  3. View traffic information in the details pane for the CMG endpoint and the site system capabilities it connects to. These statistics show customer requests that fall into these roles. Requests include policies, location, registration, content, inventory, and customer notifications.

monitor content

Monitor content that you distribute to a CMG like any other distribution point. For more information, seemonitor content.

When you view the CMG list in the console, you can add more columns to the list. For example himStorage capacity (GB)The column shows the amount of data that customers have downloaded from the service in the last 30 days.

  • Use to troubleshoot service healthCMGService.logmiSMS_Cloud_ProxyConnector.log.
  • Use to troubleshoot client trafficCMGService.logmiSMS_Cloud_ProxyConnector.log.

Note 1: Synced Azure logs

These are local Configuration Manager log files that the cloud service manager syncs from Azure storage every five minutes. The cloud management gateway sends logs to Azure Storage every five minutes. Therefore, the maximum delay is 10 minutes. Detailed options affect local and remote logs. The actual filenames include the service name and role instance ID. For example CMGservice name-RoleInstanceID-CMGSetup.log. These log files are synchronized, so you don't need RDP to the cloud management gateway to get them, and this option isn't supported.

Cloud-Admin-Panel

The cloud admin panel provides a centralized view for using the CMG. It also displays data about cloud users and devices.

In the Configuration Manager console, go toAt sightWorkspace. ChooseCloud-ManagementKnot and look at the tiles on the board.

The following screenshot shows the CMG specific section of the Cloud Admin Dashboard:

connection analyzer

To help troubleshoot, use the CMG connection analyzer for real-time verification. The utility in the console checks the current status of the service and the communication channel through the CMG endpoint to each management point that allows CMG traffic.

  1. In the Configuration Manager console, go toAdministrationWorkspace. ExpandCloud-Servicesand select thatCloud-Management-GatewayIs.

  2. Select the target CMG instance, and then selectconnection analyzerI left.

  3. In the CMG Connection Analyzer window, select one of the following options to authenticate with the service:

    1. Azure AD users- Use this option to simulate communication in the same way as a cloud-based user identity connected to an Azure AD-joined Windows device. chooseEnterto securely enter credentials of an Azure AD user account.

(Video) How To Setup Cloud Management Gateway (CMG) in Microsoft SCCM to Manage Internet Clients

    2. client certificate: Use this option to simulate communication in the same way as a Configuration Manager client with aClient Authentication Certificate.

  4. chooseBeginto start the analysis. The analysis window displays the results. Select an entry to view more details in the Description field.

Monitor CMG - Configuration Manager (2)

Configure outgoing traffic alerts

Outbound traffic alerts let you know when network traffic approaches a 14-day threshold. By creating the CMG, you can set up traffic alerts. If you skipped this part, you can still configure alerts after the service is running. Adjust alarm settings at any time.

You can also set limits on the amount of data you want to store in the CMG that clients download. Use alerts for these thresholds to decide when you can stop or remove the cloud service, customize content stored in the CMG, or change which clients can use the service.

  1. Go toAdministrationworkspace, expandCloud-Servicesand select thatCloud-Management-GatewayIs.

  2. Select the CMG in the list pane, and then selectCharacteristicsI left.

  3. Go towarningsGuide to enable thresholds and alerts:

    • specifies the14 days data limit for outgoing data transferin gigabytes (GB). This limit helps control the amount of data transferred from CMG to clients every two weeks. By default, this limit is approx.10 TB. The default is10.000GB. The site generates critical alerts and alerts when transfers reach the levels you set. By default, these alerts occur at 50% and 90% of the threshold.

    • If CMG is enabled for content, also specify aStorage warning limit. This limit sets an upper limit on the amount of content stored in the CMG. By default, this limit is approx.2 TB. The default is2.000GB. Configuration Manager generates critical alerts and alerts when the remaining free disk space reaches certain values. By default, these alerts occur at 50% and 90% of the threshold.

monitoring

CMG alerts depend on Azure usage statistics, which can take up to 24 hours to become available. For more information on storage analytics for Azure, seememory analysis.

On an hourly cycle, the primary site that the CMG is monitoring downloads transactional data from Azure. Stores this transaction data in theCloudDP-<Service Name>.logFile on the website server. Configuration Manager evaluates this information against the storage and transfer quotas for each CMG. When data transfer reaches or exceeds the volume specified for alerts or critical alerts, Configuration Manager generates the appropriate alert.

Because the site downloads information about data transfers from Azure every hour, usage may exceed a critical or warning threshold before Configuration Manager can access the data and raise an alert.

(Video) ConfigMgr Cloud Management Gateway - Virtual Machine Scale Sets

Stop the CMG if it exceeds the limit

Configuration Manager can stop a CMG service when total data transfer exceeds its limit. Carrywarningsto trigger notifications when usage reaches critical or warning levels. To reduce unexpected Azure charges due to increased usage, this option disables the cloud service.

Important

Even if the service is not running, there are still charges for the cloud service. The service disruption does not eliminate all associated Azure costs. To eliminate all cloud service costs,Remove the CMG.

If you stop the CMG service, internet-based clients cannot communicate with Configuration Manager.

All data transfer (outbound) includes cloud service and storage account data. This data comes from the following streams:

  • CMG for the client
  • CMG for the site, including CMG log files
  • If you enable CMG for content, storage account for the client

For more information about these data streams, seeCMG ports and data flow.

(Video) Cloud Management Gateway (CMG) Community Session with the Patch My PC Team

The memory warning threshold is independent. This alert monitors the capacity of your Azure Storage instance.

If you use the CMG instance in theCloud-Management-GatewayIn the console, you can see the entire data transfer in the details pane.

Configuration Manager checks the threshold every six minutes. If there is a sudden increase in usage, it can take up to six minutes for Configuration Manager to detect that the threshold has been exceeded and stop the service.

Process to stop the cloud service when it exceeds the limit

  1. Configure outgoing traffic alerts.

  2. NOwarningsOn the CMG Properties tab, enable the option toStop this service when the critical threshold is exceeded.

To test this feature, temporarily decrease one of the following values:

  • 14-day limit for data transfer out (GB). The default is10000.

  • Threshold percentage to generate a critical alert. The default is90.

Next Steps

If you need to change the configuration, you can change the CMG:
