Characteristics
Resources to Help Students Succeed!
- Thematic, comparative and truly global.shortly after design, ways of the worldAvoid overwhelming detail and instead emphasize key developments, modeling the type of historical thinking that is at the heart of the AP® course. Common themes include global trade, the rise of great religious traditions, industrialization, the rise and fall of totalitarian systems, technological innovation, and human impact on the environment. The first sub-essays form the basis for the following chapters and encourage students to make connections between the cultures of the world.
- NEU! AP® Skills-Workshops.From sourcing a key document to developing a case for continuity and change, these fifteen AP® Skills workshops present and develop essential AP® Skills in context. Each workshop includes a hands-on explanation, models from real historians, inside information on how the skill is scored on the exam, and hands-on exercises structured to build the skill. The workshops include:
- Expectations
- Proof
- Comparison
- contextualization
- causality
- continuity and change
- Answer questions briefly
- Primary Sources: Supply
- Primary Sources: Content
- secondary sources
- Write a historical argument
- Write a comparative argument
- Write an argument for continuity and change
- Write a causality argument
- quantitative data
- UPDATED! Built-in AP® Skills questions. To practice AP® skills consistently throughout the course and in context, this edition includes a large number of additional AP® skills questions in each chapter, including questions on causality, comparison, continuity and change, contextualization, analysis of evidence, and development of arguments. Additionally, to aid in the analysis of visual evidence such as artwork, maps, and data presentations, each image in the book is accompanied by a skill-based AP® Analysis question.
- EXPANDED! More AP® exam practice. For this edition ofways of the world, we've included AP® exam exercises after each chapter and part, including multiple-choice and short-answer questions after each chapter, as well as document-based questions and long essays after each part.
- NEW! Job role with DBQ-aligned evidence. For this edition, we worked with an AP® course specialist to adapt the Working with Evidence feature to the skills required in DBQ. Text and image sources are now combined in each section to more closely resemble the types of evidence provided in the DBQ. To help young readers, longer text sources have been broken down into shorter sections, followed by questions for better understanding. Additionally, AP® Historical Evidence Analysis Questions follow each source and provide students with practice in the type of analysis found in the DBQ. Finally, each section ends with an AP® message that uses sources to develop an argument that simulates the task in the DBQ.
- NEW! Practice in the analysis of secondary sources.IsThe voices of historiansThe feature in each chapter provides students with a consistent practice working with the analysis of secondary sources. This feature involves two paired voices, often with different viewpoints on a topic, along with questions to guide the student's discussion.
- Improved chapter checking.Ischapter overviewAt the end of each chapter, the narrative was revised with the AP® course and the student in mind. Hekey termsList helps students reviewlarge photoQuestions encourage understanding and exploration of the chapter material. FORNEW! make connectionsThe question in this issue challenges students to use historical reasoning skills in all chapters.
- NEW! dig deeperSidebars help to better align the book with the AP® course by adding brief discussions of course concepts related to the book's narrative.
- snapshotBoxes provide visual presentations of information about a topic, region, or time period. These resources often include quantitative data to practice analyzing this challenging form of evidence.
- Modeling real historical arguments. Two features in this issue are designed to give students a behind-the-scenes look and into ongoing conversations in the field of history. At the end of each chapter a short summaryreflectionsThe section poses provocative and thought-provoking questions about the historian's role in shaping human history.¡NUEVO! disputesThe essays illuminate debates on fundamental historical issues: the beginning of history, the origins of the great religious traditions, the nature of empires, the idea of the Atlantic world, the industrial revolution and the concept of globalization. Through these resources, students experience firsthand the process of reading historical evidence and making historical arguments.
- "Zoom in" functions link specific people, places and events to major themes in world history. A "zoom in" feature in each chapter draws attention to specific people, places and events and places them in a broader global context. Topics include Göbekli Tepe and pre-agricultural monuments, Trung Trac and the resistance against the Chinese Empire, gunpowder, the end of the Byzantine Empire, feminism and nationalism in Java, the Cuban Revolution and many more.

“Robert Strayer found a magical sweet spot between concise and comprehensive, between depicting world history and engaging students, and between originality and convenience. The online version includes a number of accessories that are very useful for students and teachers alike. Learning, editable quizzes and test benches, exercises in reading historical documents and documents and related space for student responses, timeline activities, PowerPoint presentations, chapter overviews and much more... At the end of the year I conducted a survey of my students' satisfaction and a parallel found with mine. In short, this is a refreshingly engaging educational set, not "just" text."
- Edward Walsh, Highschool Lancaster, Nova York
"I'm impressed with the visual feeds and document review areas. They will be very helpful in the redesigned course."
- Paula D'Spain, McKinney ISD, TX
"I love the book. I am very impressed by its connections to content standards and professional standards."
-Jason Carter, High School in Fairbanks, Ohio
"I like documents within the book. I used to use a separate document book for primary sources."
- Paul Hoelscher, Clayton, MO Schools
“I LOVE how the book is organized to conform to AP® periodization. It makes the pauses between periods very clear for me as a teacher and also for the students. The guided reading questions in the margin give students directions on what to look up as they read. A teacher can easily write them down and turn them into a student guided reading book (An easy way to implement changes for multiple students.) The AP® -Test tips are well organized to show students how to fill in the information and skills they need for the exam Especially those related to writing The review questions at the end of the chapter tie in well with the AP® topics and require by students to look for general topic-based questions. I also love that visual fonts are included too."
- Tyronne Shaw, McKinley High School of Technology, Washington DC
